Biographical history
Roedd Alwyn D. Rees (1911-1974) o Gorseinon, sir Forgannwg, yn gymdeithasegydd. Bu'n fyfyriwr yng Ngholeg y Brifysgol, Aberystwyth, cyn cael ei benodi'n diwtor yn 1936 ac yn Gyfarwyddwr Adran Efrydiau Allanol y coleg hwnnw yn 1949. Parhaodd yn y swydd tan ei farwolaeth. Gwelodd y bygythiadau sydd yn wynebu diwylliannau lleiafrifol, ac roedd yn gefnogwr brwd o Gymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg yn ystod cyfnod mwyaf dadleuol ei hanes. Roedd Rees yn un o'r ymgyrchwyr dros sefydlu neuadd Gymraeg i fyfyrwyr yn Aberystwyth. Roedd yn olygydd Barn, 1966-1974, ac Yr Einion rhwng 1949 a 1958. Yn 1950 cyhoeddodd gampwaith ar astudiaethau gwerin Cymru, Life in a Welsh Countryside, am blwyf Llanfihangel yng Ngwynfa yn y 1930au, ac roedd yn gyd-olygydd Welsh Rural Communities. Ysgrifennodd Celtic Heritage yn 1961 gyda'i frawd Brinley Rees.
