Biographical history

Edgar Phillips (EP) Harries, CBE, (1888-1963), was Secretary of the Organisation Department of the TUC (Trades Union Congress) between 1932 and 1948, and First Secretary of the Pembrokeshire County Labour Party. He was born in Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire, the son of Thomas Henry Harries. He began a shipwright's apprenticeship in 1903 and became involved in the establishment of the Pembrokeshire County Labour Party, eventually becoming its President. In 1929, he began working for the TUC in London. During the Second World War and the years immediately following, he concentrated on the problems of manpower and production. He received a CBE in 1948, the same year that he retired from the TUC. He was married to Rose and had four children.

Personal papers of Edgar P. Harris, CBE, [c. 1916]-1963, comprising letters, press cuttings, obituaries, certificates, grant of CBE, a diary for 1960, articles by him, and a copy of an unpublished biography of Edgar P. Harries entitled 'A Pembrokeshire Pioneer' written by his son.
