Administrative history
The Church in Wales came formally into being in 1920 when the disestablishment of the Church of England within Wales took effect. St Asaph was one of the four original dioceses in Wales, along with Bangor, St Davids and Llandaff.
Archival history
The records were formerly kept in the Diocesan Registry, Diocesan Offices, and St Asaph Cathedral.
Immediate source of acquisition or transfer
Deposited by the Representative Body of the Church in Wales in 1944.
Further deposits of records have been made since then from bishops of St Asaph and the various diocesan and capitular offices.

Scope and content
Records relating to the administration of the diocese of St Asaphs and Dean and Chapter of St Asaphs Cathedral, comprising episcopal registers, bishops' transcripts, marriage bonds and affidavits, and chapter act books, as well as records relating to: the ordination, appointment and resignation of clergymen and other individuals; the licensing of curates and other individuals; the licensing and consecration of land and buildings; faculty papers; dilapidations and sequestrations; augmentations, the creation of new parishes and boundary changes; episcopal revenues and accounts; parochial returns; deeds; consistory courts; visitations; correspondence; and miscellaneous volumes and papers, including terriers and documents relating to episcopal elections.
Two addtional boxes of faculties relating to parishes within the St Asaph Diocese were deposited February 2006.
Confirmations, 2004-2006 relating to parishes within St Asaph Diocese were deposited April 2006.
A collection of twenty-three boxes containing faculty and consecration papers relating to the St Asaph Diocese were deposited September 2007.
One box containing copies of confirmation registers listing persons in St Asaph Diocese, 2003-2007, were deposited October 2007.
Confirmations registers for parishes within the St Asaph Diocese, 2008-2010, were deposited March 2011, and confirmation registers for parishes within the St Asaph Diocese, 2009-2011, were deposited January 2012. Further confirmation registers for 2012 within the St Asaph Diocese were received December 2012.
Confirmation registers 2012-2013 for parishes within the St Asaph Diocese were received November 2013, and for 2013-2014 in October 2014.
Confirmation registers 2014 for parishes within the St Asaph Diocese were received January 2015.
Confirmation registers 2015 for parishes within the St Asaph Diocese were received July 2015.
