John Davies (1804-1884), Independent minister, linguist and commentator, was born in the parish of Llanarth. Accepted into Newtown College in 1822, he mastered Hebrew, Aramaic and Syrian as well as the customary Greek, Latin and divinity. He was chairman of the Union of Welsh Independents and wrote frequently to the periodicals of the time. He also excelled as a translator and commentator and published, amongst other works, Y Proffywdi Byrion, 1881, the translations Llyfr Coheleth and Llyfr Hosea, a series of lectures entitled Horae Petrinae, and a collection of his poetry, Flores Poetici.
