History

Gwion Davies, scientist, seaman and explorer, was the only son of Professor J. Glyn Davies and Hettie Davies. He was born on 3 September 1917 at Westyn, Flintshire, and had three elder sisters called Gwen, Mair and Elin. He attended Bootham School in York and later studied Zoology at Gonville and Caius, Cambridge. He was awarded the Polar Medal with Antartic clasp pin in 1953. He died on 22 June 2005.
