Biographical history
David Davies ('Top Sawyer') (1818-1890) of Llandinam was a prominent entrepreneur, industrialist, the Liberal MP for Cardiganshire and a founder member of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1872. His son Edward (1852–1898) inherited the responsibilities of the huge fortune his father had made developing railways, sinking coal mines and dock-building. The weight of responsibility administering the family businesses and the Ocean Coal Company at a time when all was not well in the collieries played heavily upon Edward's fragile disposition and he suffered a mental breakdown — he died shortly afterwards at the early age of forty-five.
