Administrative history
Cymru Goch was a revolutionary socialist party which was created following the demise of the Welsh Socialist Republican Movement. Many members had previously been active within Plaid Cymru and produced a newspaper "Y Faner Goch" from 1978. By the mid-1990s the party had over 300 members and 13 branches and took part in various campaigns against the Community Charge (Poll Tax) and against Welsh Water PLC. The party had several councillors elected and fielded a candidate in the 1994 elections to the European Parliament. The party took an abstenionist view towards the UK and European Parliaments and decided not to field candidates in the 1997 General Election. Cymru Goch joined in the "Wales United" campaign against the Labour Government's devolution proposals in 1997, viewing them as inadequate and instead proposed a powerful people's parliament. Not to be confused with a movement of the same name in the 1970s.
