Administrative history

Croesor slate quarry, near Penrhyndeudraeth, Merionethshire, first opened in the 1850s, and was operated by Croesor United Slate Co. Ltd until it closed in 1878. Nearby Parc quarry was opened c. 1870, employing up to 50 men, coming under the management of the engineer Moses Kellow (1862-1943). In 1895, Croesor quarry was reopened under Kellow's management and run in conjunction with Parc quarry by the Parc and Croesor Slate Quarries Company Limited, producing 5,000 tonnes of slate per annum. The two quarries were notable for being totally underground and for the technical innovations introduced by Kellow such as the first use of electric locomotives and his patent rock drill. Despite these innovations, the mines declined in the early 20th century, and Parc closed in 1920, and Croesor in 1930.
