Biographical history
The Council members were appointed by the Secretary of State for Wales and included a wide range of educational and lay expertise. Hywel Evans was appointed chairman and Mrs Margaret Hemmings, Headteacher, Lewis Girls' School, Ystrad Mynach was the vice-chair. The Council met an average of seven times a year. Its initial work included responding to the proposals for the national curriculum as they were published, and the consideration of INSET arrangements and Welsh affairs.
