Constituency files. Under embargo for 84 years (Data Protection Act exemption s.40). The original arrangement of the papers in these files has been preserved. When first elected to Parliament in May 1979, Mr Best assigned a number to each enquiry he received and filed his correspondence in broad chronological order. This practice was discontinued in 1980 and henceforward correspondence began to be filed alphabetically usually by the surname of the correspondent, but occasionally by the name of the society which the correspondent represented or by the subject under consideration. From Dec. 1983 until April 1985 duplicate carbon copies of outgoing correspondence were retained (files 209-21 and 241-4).
