Note
The Conservative Party had been subject to serious divisions on the European Union for a number of years. In order to settle ths issue, John Major resigned as leader of to force a ballot. Major faced John Redwood in the first round of voting and defeated him with a sufficient margin to avoid a secnd round of voting. Had the voting gone to a second round, other candidates were rumored to be ready to come forward.
