Scope and content

Cledwyn Hughes, Secretary of State for Wales, The Welsh Office, 47 Parliament Street, London SW1. The Welsh Economic Council has come to an end. It is the obligation and privilege of the writer to correspond with each member to thank him personally for his substantial contribution to the work of the Council. No-one has been more audacious and generous in his support of the Welsh nation than Huw T. Edwards. His contribution has been substantial and significant both on the Welsh Economic Council and on the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire. Is on the point of appointing the new Council. There is a need for a wider representation from movements and bodies that were not represented on the old Economic Council. It is not possible to appoint everyone who was associated with the old Council to membership of the new Council; it is time for new members to make a contribution. The invitations have already been sent out to the members of the new Council, and their names will soon be announced. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards agrees that it is a Council worthy of the difficult work which lies ahead, and that it contains a fair representation from all aspects of Welsh life. Feels wholly sure that, although Huw T. Edwards's name is not among the membership of the new Council, they will still turn to him for his valuable advice from time to time. The writer's hope is that Huw T. Edwards will still be ready to contribute from his experience and ability for the good of Wales. More perhaps than anyone else, the writer realises how much is the debt of Wales to Huw T. Edwards for his consistent leadership over the years. The common people of Wales have every reason to feel proud of him. Welsh.
