Administrative history
The Cardiff International Poetry Competition took place annually. It was first held in 1986 and by 1995, the competition was the largest of its kind in the UK. Its aim, in keeping with Academi policy, was to give new writers an opportunity to prove their abilities and to give the city of Cardiff and the literature of Wales an international profile. Up to 1996, the competition formed part of the Cardiff Literature Festival and was officially called the City of Cardiff International Poetry Competition. In 1996, its name changed to the County of Cardiff International Poetry Competition. Today, it is simply known as the Cardiff International Poetry Competition. Originally, as well as the main competition, an award was also given to the best entry from Wales.
