Leonard Joseph Brown (1873-1951) was an employee in the Clerical Department of the Great Western Railway, Paddington. He retired to Merionethshire, first at Barmouth and subsequently at Ty'n-y-ceunant, Islaw'r-dref, Dolgellau. He was a keen walker who kept detailed accounts of his mountain ascents, including Cadair Idris, which he climbed five hundred and eighty-one times. His uncle, L. W. Brown (1846-1926) of Bath, worked for Messrs C. Milsom and Sons, pianoforte dealers, Bath, Somerset.
