Biographical history

Sir Joseph Alfred Bradney (1859-1933), historian and genealogist of Monmouthshire, graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1881, and became a captain in the Monmouthshire Militia in 1882, eventually rising to the rank of colonel. He remained connected with the militia and the army until after World War 1, and served Monmouthshire as a Justice of the Peace, county councillor, sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant. He was also a member of the Court and Council of the National Library of Wales, of the Court of the National Museum of Wales, and of the Royal Commission on Ancient Monuments in Wales, and was knighted in 1924, having been made a CB in 1911. He was a Latin scholar, and is best known for his work on many aspects of the history of Monmouthshire, to which he devoted much of his later life. He collected and transcribed many original documents in the course of his research. His greatest achievement was a monumental work on the subject, which was published between 1904 and 1932 and remained incomplete on his death in 1933.
