Biographical history

The O'Donnell Lecture was established by the will, 1934, of Charles James O'Donnell who bequeathed income from his house at 37 New Bond Street, London, to maintain a lecture by the Universities of Wales, Oxford, Ireland and Scotland, on 'the British or Celtic element in the English language and dialects of English Counties and the special terms and words used in agriculture and handicrafts and the British or Celtic element in the existing population of England'. Whilst the Universities were responsible for making arrangements for holding the lecture, finance was administered by trustees. The will itself was disputed by relations of O'Donnell and resulted in lengthy and complicated legal proceedings eventually reaching the High Court of Chancery.
