Biographical history

Lands in Talerddig and Arwystli, Montgomeryshire, previously belonging to the abbey of Ystrad Marchell, were acquired by the Purcells of Dinthill and Nantcriba, and the Vaughan family of Llwydiarth in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The lordship of Arwystli and Cyfeiliog had been granted to Sir Francis Bacon, 1616/7. It was granted by Charles I to Sir Thomas Myddelton of Chirk Castle in 1629. Sir Thomas Myddelton sold Arwystli in 1630 to Sir Edward Lloyde senior of Berthlloyde. Cyfeiliog was sold to the Pugh family of Mathafarn. Edward Vaughan purchased Arwystli from Edward Lloyde junior, in 1695/6. The manor of Talerddig was incorporated with the Arwystli estate, presumably when Edward Vaughan married Mary Purcell in 1672. Wynnstay acquired Arwystli through the marriage of Anne Vaughan to Watkin Williams [Wynn] in 1715. The properties were listed in the pre-1810 rentals under both Arwystli lordship and the Llwydiarth Estate; from 1810 they came within the general Arwystli collection. The area described in the Wynnstay rentals as ‘Manor of Cyfeiliog’ combined three estates in western Montgomeryshire. Mathafarn in the manor or lordship of Cyfeiliog was purchased by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn’s mother from Gogerddan for £33,400 in 1754. Rhiwsaeson was purchased in 1758 and Tirymynech in 1762.
