Hughes, Cledwyn, 1920-1978

John Cledwyn Hughes (1920-1978), novelist, was born in Llansanffraid, Montgomeryshire, where his family had farmed for generations. He was a qualified hospital pharmacist, and worked in Yorkshire and Liverpool before settling in Arthog, Merionethshire, in 1947, as a full-time writer. He married Alyna and they had two daughters. He wrote numerous books, among them The Different Drummer (1947), The Inn Closes for Christmas (1947), Wennon (1948) and The Civil Strangers (1949). His topographical books, A Wanderer in North Wales (1949) and Portrait of Snowdonia (1967) were widely acclaimed. He also wrote children's books, including a collection of short stories, The King who Lived on Jelly (1961). He died at Arthog in 1978.

Yr oedd Nansi Selwood yn athrawes, ffermwraig, hanesydd lleol ac awdures nifer o nofelau hanesyddol. Fe’i ganwyd yn Annie Roderick Williams ar 8 Tachwedd 1921 yn Fferm Trebannog Isa, Penderyn, Rhigos, ac wedyn symudodd y teulu i Hirwaun. Bu’n astudio hanes ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd a bu’n athrawes Gymraeg a Hanes yn ysgolion uwchradd Cathays, Caerdydd, a Phwllheli. Priododd Jack Selwood yn 1948. Cyfieithiwyd ei nofel Brychan dir (1987) i’r Saesneg gan ei gŵr Jack, The land of Brychan, yn 1994, a’r nofel i blant Dan Faner Dafydd Gam (1991) ganddo i Beneath the banner of Dafydd Gam (1992). Dyfarnwyd iddi Wobr Griffith John Williams 1987 am ei nofel Brychan dir. Lluniodd gyfrol am hanes Cwm Cynon sef A history of the villages of Hirwaun and Rhigos yn 1997. Dysgodd ddarllen braille yn ei hwythdegau. Bu Nansi Selwood farw ar 18 Chwefror 2017 mewn cartref gofal yn Nhrecynon, Aberdâr.
