History

This group of charters, too, must have come to Wynnstay through the marital link with the Vaughans of Llwydiarth. In the first half of the sixteenth century, John ap Howell Vychan had married Elizabeth Grey, a descendant of the Grey and the Charleton families, who were the lords of Powys. Edward de Charleton was successful in defeating the supporters of Owain Glyndwr, 1401-1406, several of whom later received pardons. The less fortunate rebels had their lands confiscated and a number of them were executed.
