History

The librarian David Rhys Philips, Beili Glas, (1862-1952) was born in the Vale of Neath. As a youth, he won a number of prices at local eisteddfodau. For a short while he was working as a miner before becoming a compositor and proof reader at Walter Whittingdon's printing office in Neath in 1893 and working as an auxiliary postman. He was appointed a reader at Oxford University Press. He did much research into local history. He played a part in founding the Welsh Bibliographical Society. At the Neath National Eisteddfod in 1918 he won a prize for an essay on the Neath Valley. He did much work for the cultural life of Wales. He was working as a librarian in Swansea and retired as Joint Librarian of Swansea Public Library in 1939.
