History
Plas y Ward formed the core of this estate and it was acquired, burdened with mortgage debts, upon the marriage of Sir William Williams, 2nd Bart, to Jane Thelwall in 1684. Some of the properties may have remained in Thelwall hands and may never have belonged to Wynnstay; the chief rents due from Edward Thelwall’s lands were paid to the Countess of Warwick (see non Wynnstay rental RA32, Wynnstay schedule 1980, p. 153). Evidence from the early 19th century rentals suggests that several further properties in the Vale of Clwyd were added to Wynnstay’s own holdings.
